Remodeling Planning Hints

STORAGE- Choose a secure, enclosed, weather-proof area in which to store cabinets, fixtures, and appliances between delivery and installation.  A garage is generally a good location (this is a great time to get rid of all that “stuff” that’s collected out there).  Depending on the extent of the project, the installers may also need a place to store their tools- out of the reach of children and pets.

Remodeling is DUSTY.  Electronics such as computers, televisions, stereo equipment and fish tanks should be well covered if they are near the workspace.

Plastic sheeting from the hardware store can be used to seal doorways, pass-throughs, or windows into other rooms.  Be sure to use painters tape or something similar that will not damage paint or other surfaces.

All pictures, mirrors, and breakables should be removed from walls and shelves in the workspace and in adjacent rooms.  Vibrations from hammering, etc. could cause these items to fall- even on the other side of the wall!

PETS may not always appreciate the commotion involved in the construction process.  Confine them in another part of the house away from the remodeling or arrange “doggie daycare” or a boarding kennel.  Discuss alternatives with your veterinarian- your pets will thank you for working to minimize their stress level.

PACK up your room well before the project begins (Another great time to get rid of “stuff” you haven’t seen in years).

Label boxes carefully to simplify unpacking.

Fragile items should be packed carefully, marked FRAGILE, and stored away from the work area.

Survival tips for kitchen remodels:

Choose an area to use as a temporary kitchen.  Think about including:

  • a refrigerator (consider a small dormitory room unit)
  • microwave  (consolidate microwave safe dishes in one spot and plan microwaveable meals)
  • sink (a water source for doing dishes, etc.)  Stock up on bottled water.  Wash dishes in the bathtub (or use paper!)
  • Coffee maker- filters, coffee, bottled water
  • Utensils- don’t pack the basics- can opener, sharp knives, bottle openers
  • Supplies- paper plates and napkins, plastic cups and silverware, trash bags, cleaning supplies, paper towels
  • Staples- salt & pepper, cereal, condiments, etc.
  • Table- for dining and food prep

For bathroom remodels- pack a “vacation” bag with hairdryers, toothpaste, toiletries, and medications that need to be accessible.
